UCLan’s Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies programmes combine the practical and theoretical aspects of flying with the underlying principles of aerospace engineering. Entry Requirements

Our typical offer is 120 UCAS Points including Maths and Physics at B.  We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, including work experience and personal statement. General Studies accepted

While studying for your Aerospace Engineering degree you will undertake ‘Private Pilot License (PPL)’ theoretical studies in your 2nd year, and successful completion of those subjects, determined by passing the Civil Aviation Authorities Private Pilot’s Licence Examinations. These CAA examinations are an essential component of a PPL. These degree programmes do not include the practical flying components of the PPL (typically 45 hours), but we have arrangements with a flight training school who will offer these to you for an additional fee. You can however, fine tune your practical skills using UCLan’s excellent flight simulators. Practical flying is not an essential component in order to complete these programmes.

Sandwich Placement Year

This course offers an optional 48-week sandwich placement in industry – this comes between the second and third years. You are responsible for finding your own placement. We will support you in preparation for this with the Faculty Placement Team and UCLan Careers, who can help you plan and develop your CV and applications, and have practice interviews.

Placements are an invaluable opportunity to help consolidate your first two years learning, gain experience, and radically enhance your employability. The benefit of the experience gained during a placement is often evident in improved performance in the final year of the course, and when competing for graduate jobs.

You can make sure it is right for you and gives you an idea of what area within that industry you enjoy, what you don’t like and where the most money is made. For those students who would like a future career as a commercial pilot, our integrated MEng programme is a great option, it introduces ‘Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL)’ theoretical studies in year four. These are university examinations that are intended to prepare you for sitting CAA ATPL examinations after you have graduated. Again you can make use of our simulation facilities to further develop your flying skills, and practical flying can be arranged at additional cost with our flight training school partners.

These programmes are an ideal way to gain the theoretical training required to obtain a pilot’s license while simultaneously gaining an engineering degree.

Learning Environment and Assessment

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

Our course is delivered via a mix of lectures, practicals and projects. Lectures are provided to guide and inform and your knowledge, understanding and skills are developed through application. Assessments will be divided between unseen examinations and a variety of regular assignments and challenges. Practical competence is important to the engineering philosophy at UCLan and this will be reflected in the design and weighting of assessments.

Invited lectures and masterclasses will be provided on a range of topics, including the effective use of software packages for computer-aided design, computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and so on.

We have established links with many aerospace companies and you will have opportunities for guest lectures, visits and industrial placements.

Professional Accreditation

This course has been designed to comply with the educational requirements published by the UK Engineering Council. We are in discussion with the Royal Aeronautical Society in order to ensure that we meet their requirements and expectations throughout the course. This effort will pave the way to full accreditation after graduation in 2022.

Immersive Flight Simulators – Redbird FMX

The FMX’s electric motion platform and wrap-around visual offer fantastic realism and as such, it has been approved for commercial training by the EASA aviation authority. UCLan’s FMX can be configured as two different aircraft types,  a Cessna C172, and a Piper Seminole PA44-S and is complete with an instructors station, and an external monitoring and debriefing station.

Engineering / CNC Workshops

Engineering / CNC Workshops

The student workshop will provide a focus for design and manufacture. This has CNC lathe and milling machines, a five axis laser cutter and a wide variety of machine shop equipment.

Desktop flight simulators

This equipment takes the advanced flight training tools found on our large simulators and put them in a multi-screen desktop device. As a student on our aerospace degree courses, you can use these simulators to reinforce your understanding of aircraft flight dynamics and they can be rapidly reconfigured to a wide range of different aircraft types, from civil aircraft, helicopters and even the Space Shuttle!

Composites (GRP bodywork) Workshop

The composites workshop is used for a variety of activities from research on resin infusion to the development of F3 hovercraft. It is intended to use this also for airframe manufacture.

The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) are to use high street drones for mine clearance and peace keeping operations in Cambodia and during United Nations missions around the world, following training from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Entry Requirements

For changes to 2017 UCAS tariff entry requirements please see our Essential and Important Course Information. UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.
