Entry Requirements:

This workshop is designed for all practitioners who undertake examination of the newborn and wish to refresh their skills, i.e. GPs, midwives, ANNPs, hospital doctors, health visitors and neonatal nurses.

Course Content

Course Outline:
The sessions will be predominantly delivered by contributors to the recent publication which supports NHS UK Screening Committee guidelines (Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Standards and Competencies, 2008) with updates.

Learning Environment & Assessment:

Academic Expertise

Anne Lomax is a senior lecturer providing education for pre-registration midwifery programmes at UCLan. She is also course leader for the post-qualification Examination of the Newborn module. Anne is a member of the NIPE UK Screening Committee Advisory Group and is involved in the development of national standards, competencies and learning resources for examination of the newborn.

Learning outcome & aims

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Establish normality and recognise any deviation from the norm within a selected range of conditions
  • Be aware of screening needs where necessary
  • Identify professional development and role issues in relation to clinical practice
  • Understand the need for prompt follow up where appropriate, and care pathways within the wider MDT
  • Appreciate clinical skill acquisition in relation to the examination

We have great links with employers including household names such as Sony, BAE Systems and Apple. We also have links with the smaller companies in the region and offer help and assistance to more than 1,000 of these – with many of our graduates staying in the region it is important we develop these relationships.
