Why study this course?

Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. On this degree you’ll study the human body in both normal and altered states, including the development of disease processes. You’ll gather a sound understanding of how drugs and medicines can have a beneficial effect on the body and how adverse reactions to pharmaceuticals can arise. If you have an interest in the human body and want to learn more about how the body functions to maintain a stable environment then this is the ideal course for you. It is the perfect route if you want a career in the pharmaceutical industry – drug testing, drug research, drug design and development, lab work or other bioscience based careers.  

Entry Requirements

Our typical offer is 72 UCAS Points, including Biology or Chemistry or Environmental Science or Applied Science at A2. We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, including work experience and personal statement.

BTEC Extended Diploma: Merit, Merit, Pass in Applied Sciences
BTEC Diploma: Distinction: Merit in Applied Sciences
Pass Access Course: 72 UCAS Points including 15 Level 3 units in Biology or Chemistry
International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 72 UCAS points from Higher Level Subjects, including Higher Level in Biology or Chemistry
IELTS: 6.0 with no score lower than 5.5
GCSE:  Maths & English at grade C/4

UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.

You’ll have the opportunity in your second year to study abroad and this includes European countries and the United States of America.

There are possible opportunities to work as a paid summer intern in the labs - working alongside academics on their specialised research area and this can often lead to publications.

This is the ideal degree if you want a career in the pharmaceutical industry – drug testing, drug research, drug design and development which in many cases will involve laboratory work but may also involve in silico studies. Some of our graduates have entered medicine and many go on to postgraduate studies in many areas of bioscience, some directly related to medical research. The generic skills learnt during this degree including writing reports and oral presentations can prove to be very useful in many managerial jobs.

Learning Environment and Assessment

Teaching on the course comprises a diverse range of methods and styles including lectures, tutorials, seminars, computer-based learning, case studies and laboratory practicals. As well as the traditional methods of teaching, e-learning (based around a virtual learning environment) and problem-based learning techniques will be used. There will be a number of opportunities for you to develop individual and team working skills.

Assessments include written and practical as well as a wide-range of coursework and examinations, allowing a full range of skills to be developed.

We are continuously purchasing novel sophisticated equipment to ensure that the students are being taught about the latest methods and understand the contribution that these can make to fundamental research discoveries e.g. in the last two years we have purchased two state of the art fluorescence microscopes, two high sensitivity fluorescence plate readers, one fluorescence microscope with sophisticated deconvolution software, a hypoxic chamber for cultured cells and a Seahorse Xp flux analyser (for measuring in situ bioenergetics parameters). This equipment is now used extensively in the final year research projects, and in some specialized modules in the second and third year of the degree and complements the continued purchasing of up to date laboratory equipment.
