Why study this course?

Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. Do you have a passion for the written word? This degree offers an in-depth look at English language and draws on a number of different disciplines in the analysis of the structural, sociolinguistic, psychological and historical dimensions of the language. Explore how language works as a structural system (the sound system and the grammar), and how it can be used in a variety of social settings: for instance, to persuade, exert power and construct identity. You’ll learn about the development of English from Anglo-Saxon to its current position as the world language; the impact that the digital age is having on the English language, while enhancing your verbal and written communication skills.

Our typical offer is 72 UCAS Points. We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, including work experience and personal statement. UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.

The BA English Language and Linguistics course is a flexible course with two distinct pathways: a standard pathway and a TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) pathway.

No matter which pathway you choose, the key feature is choice. Whether you are interested in language structure (syntax, phonetics and phonology, morphology), how language varies according to user and context, or the teaching of language, the English Language and Linguistics course will have modules suited to you. Alongside an exciting range of modules, relating to language acquisition and change, language and gender, political discourse and argumentation, forensic linguistics, literary linguistics and psycholinguistics, we have an integrated programme of study aimed at enhancing your proficiency in written English. Also with budding teachers and speech therapists in mind, we have developed unique career-specific modules- English in Education, and Language Pathology and Clinical Linguistics- which allow students to consider how to apply their linguistics skills to a professional setting. Alternatively, you could choose to specialise in the related areas of media, forensic and political discourse, or the ‘nuts and bolts’ of language by choosing syntax, phonology and morphology.

We strive for our graduates to be competent both in their use and knowledge of English, in such a way that they can pass on such knowledge to others. Certain modules are designed to enhance verbal and written communication skills whilst simultaneously enhancing employability: specific attention is paid to the development of skills and attributes necessary for the students’ chosen careers. Students will be encouraged to identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop transferable skills. The course also fosters an independent, proactive approach to learning, which encourages the development of critical thinking and reasoning skills.

In English Language and Linguistics, we are a small but dedicated team of teachers and researchers who strive to enable all students to reach their potential, in preparation for professional life or further studies. We are all active researchers and and our teaching is research-informed. Collectively, we have specialisms in Pragmatics, Argumentation Theory, Forensic Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, English Syntax and Phonology, Language Change, Ancient Germanic Syntax, Psycholinguistics, Morphology, and Educational Linguistics. Some of our researchers have been deemed to be ‘world leading’ in their fields.

We have links with a network of schools in the region, for those interested in pursuing careers in teaching and education; students who wish to teach are able to go on to gain a PGCE in primary or secondary education, or certificates in TESOL.

Learning Environment and Assessment

There are few large lectures on this course. First-year classes typically take the form of one hour workshops: after some input, students practise the skills covered. Later, classes are either workshop-style or seminar-style. There is laboratory work in the more technical areas, e.g. Corpus Linguistics.

Through the English Language Skills Initiative for Employability (ELSIE) Project you will have the opportunity to gain experience in work-based activities, such evaluating/critiquing webpage content, copy-editing, PR and press releases, customer/client information leaflets and brochures.

ELSIE will provide you the opportunity to combine personal development and career planning with your subject-specific knowledge in English Language and Linguistics – to help you improve your (academic) writing and communication skills, whilst simultaneously enhancing your employability.

Student projects have included: The Survivor’s Guide to starting High School, an ELSIE Employer-engagement event, taster sessions in local colleges, writing newspaper stories for the LEP, writing articles for West Lancashire Voluntary Service, designing resources for Schools with the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, and an Asian fashion show to raise money for the floods in Pakistan and Japan.

There is a variety of assessment methods in this course: unseen examination, written assignments, essay-type questions, and also oral presentations. Many modules require the students to analyse original data.

I realise how people use certain techniques in language and I can understand their intentions and hidden meanings.

Course facilities include well equipped classrooms and extensive Blackboard (Virtual Learning Environment) resources. Teaching is sometimes supplemented with guest speakers and students are encouraged to participate fully in group and project work. Classes will consist of lectures and seminars. Students are expected to participate in seminars and class discussions.


Graduates from our English Language courses have gone into a range of graduate professions in local government and public services, marketing, publishing, the police force, and graduate entry schemes in the private sector. Students have also gone on to study the PGCE to become teachers and some have pursued postgraduate research programmes at UCLan.

As a student in the school you will have access to our International Travel Bursary scheme through the Worldwise Awards, which enables you to spend some time overseas, on a project related to your studies. Also, through the Worldwise Centre you will get the opportunity to gain further practical experience through five day placements and short-term internships.

If you wish to study abroad as part of your course, UCLan offers a scheme for a semester/year abroad as we have exchange agreements with overseas universities.

Opportunities also exist for national and international work placement through studying a work experience module offered from our award-winning Centre for Volunteering and Community Leadership.

We offer a wide range of postgraduate taught Masters, including: MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages with Applied Linguistics, MA in Theatre, Histories and Methods (new – Subject to Validation).
