Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. This degree is perfect if you have aspirations to teach history at secondary school level or beyond. The Education aspect of the course allows you to develop an understanding of educational theories, policies and practice, and apply these to past and present educational issues, whilst the History modules cover different periods, topics, places and approaches, from early modern times to contemporary history; different areas including North America, Europe, Asia and Africa; and additional insights into museums and heritage. This means you will be well equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to teach with a high level of subject expertise, and you will also have broader skills as a team-worker and communicator which will be huge assets in any graduate workplace.

UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.

Within the History modules you will cover a wide range of material, which will provide you with useful historical topics that are part of the school curriculum at both GCSE and A Level. In addition, you may also wish to undertake modules with a more practical focus such as the Community History Project. The course has strong elements of local, national and international history.
Students can take the Community History Project, which involves them working to a project brief devised by a real client, undertaking relevant research and feeding back their findings through a display, exhibition, teaching pack, archive guide or town trail.
All final year students will undertake a dissertation in either Education or History.

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.
It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.
Gain international work experience through the Centre for Volunteering and Community Leadership with second and third year modules which are accredited by the ILM.
Course facilities include well equipped classrooms and extensive Blackboard (Virtual Learning Environment) resources for independent study.
Assessment strategies are varied. Modules are assessed by coursework, with no exams, including student presentations (both individual and group), reflective diaries, project work, videos, poster, and reflective essays.
You will have an opportunity to join a work placement within an educational setting at each stage of your degree.
Work placement opportunities in your third year exist in a historical setting, with regional and national host organisations, such as the Lancashire Archives, the Peoples’ History Museum and the Lancashire Museum Service.
This course can lead to: Secondary school or further education teaching following a PGCE or other postgraduate teacher training; Teaching support roles; Working with children and families; Youth work; Heritage sector.
