Our initiatives

  • Armed forces support

    We provide a full support service for armed forces personnel; from course funding and settling into university life to finding suitable training, careers advice, and making the step into civilian life.

  • Athena Swan

    The Athena SWAN project aims to address issues around gender and diversity within Higher Education.

  • Community Engagement and Service User Support (Comensus)

    We work in partnership with academic colleagues to include service users and carers in the design and delivery of courses and modules.

  • Widening Participation

    We have been transforming lives since 1828 and have always been committed to access and widening participation. We pride ourselves on being an open and accessible institution for people from all backgrounds.

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion

    We recognise that our diversity is our strength and work hard to ensure that equality, diversity, and inclusion are part of everything we do.

  • Colleague equality networks

    We support an array of colleague groups and networks with the aim to promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within their specific areas of expertise.

Our History

We have a long and proud history, which can be traced back to 1828. We believe in the spirit of opportunity for all, which is the same motto and ethos as when we were created as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.

Schools and colleges liaison

We provide activities for school and college students of all ages. We can also provide teacher training, and a dedicated contact to help you work through the year to build up a tailored programme of engagement to support you and your students.

Young Scientist Centre

The Young Scientist Centre (YSC) is a partnership between the University and the Royal Institution (Ri). Our engaging and practical workshops aim to inspire the scientists and engineers of the future.
