Endodontology student Phillip Mullen tells us about his experience

MSc Endodontology student

"The part time nature of the MSc Endodontology course was very appealing to me and seemed to follow a logical order over the three years. There is a big emphasis on patient contact, which was an essential element that influenced my decision to choose this course over others in the market."

"The tutoring was of a very high standard and the support I received for the dissertation was extremely good. I was actually considering not taking on the dissertation year however, the support and encouragement from the members of staff and students made me change my mind. The course combined a variety of learning practices from tutorials to presentations and practical elements; this made the learning fun and exciting, coupled with the emphasis on Problem-Based Learning and self-learning greatly enhanced my understanding of the subject area. Since studying here I have definitely improved on my practical skill set, enabling for more difficult case complexity to be taken on and confidence in accepting referrals from external practitioners.

"Outside of my studies I have started teaching endodontics to Foundation dentists and GDP’s, these have been endodontic days arranged with Healthcare England of which I wouldn't have the opportunity without the course. They are a mixture of hands on practical days and presentations based on providing a summarised, evidence based approach to the art of endodontics. I work closely with Schottlander who provide the equipment for the days and the overriding aim is to make endodontics more enjoyable by splitting into manageable chunks. The days usually average around 9-11 delegates.

"My greatest achievement so far is gaining MSc status and winning the Dentsply Sirona Postgraduate Endodontic prize. The prize actually now sits alongside my Pitt-Ford Undergraduate prize as one of my greatest achievements.

"My biggest advice to students considering the MSc programme would be to commit and go for it! You won’t look back, it’s the start of a new career transforming the way you practice dentistry on a daily basis. In addition to this, your appreciation of literature appraisal will allow you to provide clear evidence based practice to your patients encouraging"
