Emily Hudson's once in a lifetime opportunity

1st Year BSc (Hons) Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation Student

For Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation student Emily Hudson, the opportunity to shadow the CSI team at the Lancashire Constabulary was too good to refuse.

Despite having nearly finished only her first year of the course, Emily has already discovered the incredible opportunities that are on offer for students at UCLan. She describes her experiences as a “once in a lifetime” event.

“These experiences are a once in a lifetime opportunity, I don’t think you’ll find these kinds of chances anywhere else. The experience that you get here at UCLan is just amazing.

“My shadowing involved going to a DIY store where we took some fingerprints off drill boxes. We also went to a house and extracted some footprints from the area around the door of the house. The whole experience was certainly very hands on. It was much more like a real life situation and it allowed us to really experience what it will be like out there in the real world.

“I absolutely loved the shadowing. It made me realise just what it will be like once I finish my degree. I really learnt about what CSIs do and how they work. I’d do it again in a heartbeat I loved it that much.

Emily’s relationship with her tutors helped her to secure the placement with Lancashire Constabulary. It was her lecturers that informed her of the opportunity and encouraged her to take it with both hands.

After gaining first-hand experience of the CSI industry, Emily has stated how much other students should take this opportunity if they are given the chance to do so.

“I really recommend for anyone to take part in this experience. Obviously, you can’t take part on it if you aren’t on this course so I think that’s a major selling point for this course at the university. I’d tell anyone on the course to get involved with this shadowing, the experience was absolutely amazing.

“We were told about this experience by our lecturers and our tutors. They spoke really highly about what a chance this was for us and they just told us to give it a go. I’m really glad that I did.

“This course is definitely very hands-on and has by far the best facilities that I’ve seen. I looked across many courses and universities across the country and none of them had the facilities that UCLan has. None of them came anywhere close.

“The lecturers at UCLan are amazing. They’ve all had so much experience out in the field and they help us so much. I’d definitely recommend that students come to UCLan. The course is amazing and the overall experience that you get here can’t be had anywhere else. The facilities are incredible here with the garages and the CSI houses. UCLan really is unique.”
