1. Eat out
There are many places to eat out in Preston that won’t be too hard on your bank account. Just because you’re trying to save money doesn’t mean you have to miss out on good food. Meiz (across from the train station) specialises in Japanese food, with a 50% off lunch menu Monday to Friday.
2. Visit local entertainment centres
In Preston there are a variety of activity centres to find things to do. The largest is Level, which has bowling, laser tag and crazy golf all in one place. It’s a great way to spend time with friends or make new ones. There’s always a Freshers event here, which is a good way to break the ice with your flatmates.
3. Go for a walk
With Avenham and Miller Parks close to campus, it's not hard to find scenic walk routes. There's a Japanese Garden and natural amphitheatre, leaving a lot of scope for activities to have fun with. You could go for a solo bike ride or a picnic with friends to soak up the sun.
4. Explore with public transport
The government price cap means that travel around Preston is now easier and cheaper than ever – with any single fare limited to £2 per trip (£1 on Sundays and after 7pm). Going from place to place is a great way to explore around Preston – even as far as Liverpool.
5. Study where you want to
There’s no shortage of places to study in Preston – be it in your own room or further away. Studying in coffee shops (especially those with student discounts like Black Sheep Coffee) is a relaxing way to learn without sitting in complete silence.
6. Look for local events
Preston is a vibrant town that hosts events all year round, so there will always be something to do. Events could include:
- Christmas in Winckley Square
- The Festive Fire Garden at Avenham and Miller Park
- Encounter Festival
7. Utilise the university
Most students want to go out and explore, but it’s important to remember what’s available to you from the university as well. The 24/7 library allows for group study and easy access to information. The Student Centre has an amazing café for relaxing, as well as the Bee Garden on the rooftop for a chance to sit in the sun. There's also lots of events on at the university, so keep an eye out on newsletters.
