Study Skills Tutor

Philip is a study skills tutor, working in the Academic Skills Development: WISER team, which is part of the Centre for Collaborative Learning. His main background is in English language teaching, which he started doing in 2007. He has worked in several countries, including South Korea, China and Saudi Arabia. He has taught on young learner language and activity programmes in the UK, too. He has previously taught academic skills to international students looking to studying in the United Kingdom for the first time. In addition, he has worked on five pre-sessional courses in the UK, including two at the UEA (Norwich, 2017-18) and two at The University of Sheffield (2019-20).

Philip joined the WISER team in November 2021. Drawing on his extensive experience of being an English language, study skills and pre-sessional tutor over the past 14 years, his role involves advising individual students requiring academic support. He works as part of a team, which include subject lecturers and experienced tutors. The team offers one to one tutorials, drop-in sessions in room UG05 in the new student centre, Preston, and workshops - both in-person and online.

An experienced video editor, he has created tutorial screencast videos for learners, as well as making films with students in English language teaching, and for personal pleasure. For example, he wrote a parody song about 'paraphrasing' which can be found on YouTube.
