Phil Holmes
Phil is the course leader for the BA (Hons) Sound Design programme and lectures across a range of subjects and levels. In addition to teaching, Phil is the Director of the research Centre for Cultural Preservation though Creative Practice and Co-Founder of the award winning research project, The Global Sound Movement.
Phil has a wide range of practice-based research that covers audio archives, virtual instruments, applications, websites, audio visual performances and installations. Phil's research and commitment to innovative approaches to cultural heritage were acknowledged by The Times Higher Education Awards when he won the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts category for the Global Sound Movement project. This research informs Phil's teaching and ensures that the student experience is exciting and up to date. He is also a Fellow Member of the Higher Education Academy.
As an artist and creative, Phil continues to work on multidisciplinary projects including audio installations across the National Trust and Gibraltar. His sound design work has appeared on BBC One's Planet Earth and more recently he has been invited to join the Interstellar Foundation. Collaborating with academics, scientists, philosophers and artists the Global Sound Movement are developing an archive of humanity that will send into space on a number of missions, including NASA moon landings and the next Interstellar Voyager Mission. Closer to home, Phil continues his research into tinnitus and audiology in partnership with the NHS with a view to assist in the reduction of national waiting lists. This work has seen Phil regularly contribute to BBC radio and television programmes including and across BBC4's Today Programme, BBC World Service, BBC One, BBC Wales.
