Dr Elizabeth Boaden
Liz is a Speech and Language Therapist. She is part of the Stroke Research Team with a specialist interest in swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Her portfolio of research includes the assessment and management of swallowing difficulties in acute stroke in Low-to-Middle Income Countries, swallowing assessments and oral care. She teaches on undergraduate and post-graduate courses and works with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists on dysphagia competencies for the profession.
Liz teaches on several courses at UCLan, including the MSc in Speech and Language Therapy, post graduate courses (Essentials, Principles and Advanced Stroke Practice) courses.
Liz worked in a generalist post before becoming Head of Adult Services with a consultative role in dysphagia for adults and Adult Learning Difficulties. In 1990, Liz became a founding tutor and lecturer on the Manchester Post Basic Dysphagia Course. Liz has lectured at undergraduate and post-graduate level on specialist and advanced courses, including the MSc Advanced Medical Imaging Course, as well as presenting at national and international conferences. Liz is co-author of Swallowing Guidelines: Individualised Programmes of Care and researcher and lead author of the Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Competency Framework (EDSCF). Liz was Chair of the RCSLT Expert IDDSI Group. She also has an active research portfolio, specialising on Improving Global Health by developing innovative dysphagia solutions in Low to Middle Income Countries. In 2011 Liz received a doctorate in recognition of her programme of work entitled “Improving the identification and management of aspiration after stroke” and in 2013 was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the profession.
