Karen teaches across both undergraduate and postgraduate Dentistry. With particular interest in Research Methods, Research Ethics, Systematic Review and Clinical Audit, Karen is the academic lead for dissertations across the School.
Karen is the Deputy Head for Business Development and Partnerships in the School of Dentistry. She maintains a keen interest in learning and teaching and is the academic lead for dissertations across the School.
Karen's role is to be a collaborative academic leader with regard to the business activity of the School. She supports the work of the Head of School and senior managers in contributing to the strategic objectives of the University, and provides support and guidance to staff in the development of business opportunities.
Karen's career began with a PhD in Biochemistry, looking at the relationships between metabolism and pregnancy outcomes in different ethnic groups in Leicester. She went on to teach Biology and Human Physiology and Health at Blackburn College. She spent seven years working in the NHS in Clinical Governance, leading clinical audit programmes and providing assurance to regulatory bodies with regard to information governance and quality. During this time she completed a Master of Public Health which included studies in Major Incident Management, Communicable Disease Control, Leadership and Quality, Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Since arriving at the University of Central Lancashire in 2012, Karen has been involved in the quality assurance processes for professional courses, including working closely with external examiners and professional bodies, and has attended the International Advanced Assessment Course. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Karen is fully committed to learning about what works in teaching, in particular the use of technologies both in the classroom and online. She has developed a lively community of practice within the School, with colleagues working together to develop and deliver online modules. Karen teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate Dentistry, with particular interest in Research Methods, Research Ethics, Systematic Review and Clinical Audit.
Within the School of Dentistry, Karen has encouraged and supported young researchers and initiated several dental education projects. She has presented posters and given talks about education research and online learning both at the University of Central Lancashire and at conferences of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE).
