Dr John Richmond

John leads on the organisation, quality control and recruitment of placements for the School of Medicine. He is a General Practitioner with a special interest in Substance Misuse and provides some expert teaching in this subject area to the school.

Placements and the experience they bring are integral to the gaining of the medical, physician associate and a number of other post-graduate degrees at the school of medicine. John’s role is to coordinate the finding of those places, make sure they are of sufficient quality, and manage them as a precious resource as the needs of the school changes.

John qualifies as a doctor and trained as a GP in the 1990’s and went to work and live in Western Australia for 3 years with his young family. On return he pursued an interest in Philosophy gaining an MA from Lancaster University whilst also starting to develop his career in the forensic and addiction fields of medicine. He worked as a Forensic Physician in Lancashire and Cumbria, and also with the Morecambe Bay Community Drug Team for which he ultimately became Lead Clinican. He then went on to start a medical company specifically designed to provide medical expertise to third sector substance misuse providers and grew that to be an organisation that provided the full spectrum of substance misuse community and criminal justice treatment including within the prison estate both standalone and in partnership with the third sector.
