Dr Christopher Kelsall

Senior Lecturer in Accounting, Course Leader - BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance

Chris is an experienced accounting tutor at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is currently teaching management accounting. He has taught: corporate finance - has professional body assistant examiner experience in this area; financial accounting (basic); social and environmental accounting; audit and assurance; basic levels of management and economics. Chris has been part of the accounting team awarded UCLan teaching team of the year in 2017. He is carrying out research in areas connected to his teaching including: social and environmental accounting - he has written a short on-line book on this; professionalisation studies; management accounting; audit quality. In 2018 he was awarded best staff paper at the BAFA NAG the University of Derby.

Chris tries to make the learning experience a reflective process, so students are required to challenge accepted views of information for decision making as well as how it has and is changing. He also tries to make it fun, and does this using cartoons and also relevant examples to students such as using the music and sports industries. Chris aims to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. As well as teaching Chris is the course leader for the accredited BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree - he has maintained close links with the professional bodies including being the Chair (2018-2020) of the regional Lancashire and Cumbria panel of the ACCA. He maintains his CPD through attending events, researching and presenting in particular on sustainability issues.

Chris has been a lecturer in Higher Education for two decades at a number of HEIs. Before this Chris was a management accountant for a housing association. Before joining the University of Central Lancashire in 2012 Chris was an external examiner on the MSc International Finance and Investment and MSc Financial Management programmes at the University of Central Lancashire (2007-11).

As well as being involved in numerous internal (re) validations, Chris has also been asked to be an expert panel member at a number of external validation events including:

  • the University of Central Lancashire (2007)
  • University of Bolton (2014)
  • Leeds Beckett University (2015)
  • University of South Wales (2020).
  • In 2017 Chris was the acting Division Lead for Business, Economics and International Business.

As well as being a full time lecturer, Chris completed a PhD at Sheffield University Management School in 2015. This was on accounting and sustainability. Chris has also presented at a number of international conferences and written an on-line book on Social Environmental Accounting (2019) Bookboon.

Chris has been successful in obtaining internal funding and is currently working on a number of collaborative research projects. He was also the Director of Studies for the first completed DBA at the University of Central Lancashire (2018) and is in the process of becoming the first supervisor for an MPhil/PhD candidate (October 2020). Chris is a reviewer for a number of journals and has reviewed over 10 articles within the last 12 months (including 2 reviews for a 3* journal).
