Carol Haythornthwaite

Lecturer
School of Social Work, Care and Community
0

Carol's specialism is mental health social work, and she teaches this across a range of courses within the School, contributing at BA and MA level, as well as on post-qualifying CPD modules. She brings a specialist knowledge of personality disorder. Alongside her teaching of mental health social work, Carol's professional interests are practice education and work-based learning. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Stage 2 qualified Practice Educator.

Carol acts as a cohort lead on the Social Work Degree Apprenticeship Programme, and liaises with our partner agencies and stakeholders. She is involved in the planning and delivery of a range of modules which focus on mental health social work; and others which address the critical themes in the current social work practice context. Throughout her teaching and practice, she is committed to giving a voice to service user expertise and experience.

Carol qualified as a social worker in 2013, after working within a social inclusion service for people experiencing mental health difficulty. Prior to that, she taught English as a foreign language and has a business background in pharmacy. Following her social work qualification, Carol was employed as a care coordinator within a local authority mental health complex care and treatment team. She trained as a dialectical behaviour therapist and worked within the personality disorder managed clinical network.

In 2016 Carol qualified as a stage 2 practice educator and has independently supported over 50 students from different universities. She retains an independent practice delivering social work practice education to students, so maintaining her proximity to current practice. Prior to taking up her lecturer post at the University of Central Lancashire, she acted as an Outreach Educator for us on the Social Work Degree Apprenticeship. Whilst in the role she supported us to meet the requirements of the Insitutute for Apprenticeships, as the first provider in the country of this course; and she has since retained close involvement with the programme. Previously, Carol has acted as an academic advisor for us on the national Think Ahead programme.
