Dr Ali Rouncefield-Swales
Ali is a Research Fellow in the Stroke Research Team and is an experienced researcher with significant experience working in higher education. She has held positions in research and project management across education and health, which have focused on improving the experiences of families and patients. She has a keen interest in drawing on engaging and creative methodologies that place participants at the heart of the research process.
Ali is currently involved in several research studies regarding stroke. She is helping manage PREPARE, an NIHR funded study to refine our understanding of patients' and families’ EoL needs, within the first 30 days after stroke. It will identify barriers and challenges to the delivery of EoLC&S in acute stroke units and define models of ‘usual care'. She is also working across several studies investigating oral health care in stroke, stroke workforce development and a Cochrane review of interventions for post-stroke depression.
Ali has a broad base of experience in managing research and interventions. Prior to working in higher education she worked in economic and education evaluation, running commissioned studies for the Department for International Development, Department of Work and Pensions and Department of Education. She then moved into higher education, developing learning and outreach partnerships as part of the Aimhigher Healthcare Strand in the South West and then part of the Lifelong Learning Networks. Ali was then successful in gaining a full bursary from the University of the West of England for her PhD in educational transitions of non-traditional learners.
Since completing her PhD, Ali has been involved in a range of health research studies. She worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team to explore the impact of Crohn’s and Colitis on young people's mental health and their social networks. This led to co-authoring several articles and a range of support materials. Ali has also developed a partnership with a leading academic and charity focusing on family estrangement and has co-authored reports and articles in this field. Through these studies, Ali has been involved with developing aspects of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and has led a review of children's and young people's contributions to PPI activities.
