Nutrition Assessment Suite

UCLan's Nutrition Assessment Suite houses state-of-the-art equipment for the assessment of body composition and nutrient intake.

Nutritional assessment is the process of measuring nutritional health and Anthropometry and Dietary Analysis are two key components of this. Anthropometry is the assessment of body composition. Determining the ratio of lean tissue to fat is can help prevent injury and identify possible health related risks that can undermine athletic performance. It can also be used to help an athlete achieve a level of muscle mass that optimizes their sport specific performance needs.

Assessment of nutritional status is important for everybody. At UCLan, the Nutrition Assessment suite enables us to:

  • Assess whether or not the ratio of CHO, lipid and protein is correct
  • Determine if micronutrient intakes sufficient
  • Help decide how to manipulate diet to optimise performance
  • Measure body composition

In the Nutrition Assessment Suite the following techniques are used:

Acoustic Plesmography or “Bod Pod ”. This technique uses changes in air pressure within the chamber to measure a person’s volume, which can then be used to determine their fat and fat free mass.

Bioelectrical impedance relies on the different electrical conductivity of fat and lean tissue to determine body composition.

Skin fold thickness. Staff within CASES are expert in the use of skin fold callipers to measure subcutaneous fat, one of the most accurate ways of determining body composition.

Bone ultrasound attenuation (McCue Quantitative ultrasound) relies on the transmission of sound waves through the heel bone to assess bone health. This technique is routinely used in the Nutrition Assessment Suite to assess bone health in relation to calcium and vitamin D intakes.

Diet Analysis
UCLan also has an extensive computer database that enables the assessment nutrient intake from dietary records for comparison with current UK nutrient intake recommendations.
