My experience as a BA (Hons) Business and Management undergraduate

Less than 8 months after a traumatic brain injury and against medical recommendations, I applied for UCLan’s Business and Management undergraduate course via clearing (because my college grades were not something to shout home about). Starting university at 21, I had no experience in Business at all; the only experience I had was being a full-time bar manager in my local pub (still some of the best years ever).

Despite my apprehension, I took to my course like a duck to water thanks to my lecturers being so approachable and by having an awesome group of peers that I have had the privilege of studying with. At no point during my three years did I feel any of the theories or models that I learnt were outdated or old fashioned. In fact, everything I have learnt has played a significant role in how I approach major decisions whilst using a business mind-set.

Since being at UCLan, my course has allowed me to take part in things I could never have imagined! These include:

  • Going to the UCLan Cyprus Campus as part of Leadership course
  • Becoming a member of the Business and Management’s prestigious ‘Launchpad’

  • Becoming a member of the ‘Institute of Directors’ (IDM)
  • Travelling 1839 miles in less than 30hrs, spending £0 and personally raising £700+ for Barnardo's Children Charity thanks to UCLan’s Events Management course and their "Breakout” team
  • Live Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Business simulation where our teams multi-million pound business project has been taken forward by Preston City Council
  • Study visit to Beijing, China with UCLan
  • Presenting in front of Chinese students as well as members of the United Nations
  • Drinking a £65 glass whiskey atop Beijing’s tallest skyscraper
  • Walking along the Great Wall of China

Since finishing my undergraduate course, I am now studying an MSc in Marketing Management. Alongside my master's, I and two other UCLan Business students are co-founders of a business project that we aim to have accessible to people in September. Our business venture would never have been possible without the mentoring and guidance given to us by lecturers and experts in the field that were all ready and willing to help us start our journey.

My time as Business and Management undergraduate has unfortunately ended, I can however, confidently say that I have made some of my best friends here at UCLan and some of us have now become business partners. Being at UCLan has showed me that the lecturer can provide you with all the tools you need to make you turn your ideas into a reality.
