Thomas Douglas

BA (Hons) Product Design (2014)

Thomas Douglas

Thomas Douglas graduated in 2014 from the BA (Hons) Product Design course at UCLan and has since gone on to become a Design Technical Engineer.

Returning for the Product Design graduate experience day along with other alumni, Thomas gave helpful advice and shared his experience with students before telling us what it is like to be a graduate of UCLan and where life took him after university.

“After I finished university, I continued working at McDonalds for a few weeks before I got my first job.” Finding his feet in the industry, Thomas progressed onto his second and third jobs before securing his current role working at Lunar Caravans, where he has been for the last eight months.

Thomas explains his job role and what working as a Design Technical Engineer includes on a day-to-day basis. “My main job role is to do the design of an interior from every screw right up to the big furniture and panels.”

When asked about his lasting memories of UCLan, similar to other alumni of the product design course, he remembers and is still in contact with his tutors. “Simon, Graham and Rob, they were great! I really enjoyed the course and without a doubt would definitely do it all over again. The experience and being able bond with the tutors whilst on the course was great.”

For anyone looking to do something similar to Thomas, his advice would be: “If you are into design and looking to do something creative then I would definitely recommended the product design course. For the current students, I would say to keep yourself going, learn as much as you can and never be afraid to ask. Keep practising! Practice makes perfect and it’s true.”

Talking about his time at university, Thomas explains how it has helped him get to where he is today. “It has benefited me massively. It’s not just the grade, I don’t think that’s what most companies look for, they look for the fact that you have gone into higher education to do something more in the creative field. The experience on the course has dramatically helped me, especially with what the tutors have taught me.”
