Social media support helps Sharrocks grow

Challenge

As one of the UK’s leading distributors of fresh fruit and vegetables, Sharrocks Fresh Produce Ltd sells to food service companies, supermarkets, wholesalers, greengrocers and farm shops, sourcing produce from both national and international growers.

In order to promote the business and expand its customer and supplier base by generating new enquiries, the team at Sharrocks wanted to utilise social media to achieve objectives. It was hoped that this would help to raise brand awareness, increase existing customers’ awareness of products and promote the company’s brand values.

Solution

However, with no social media presence in place, Sharrocks approached Digital First, a team of digital specialists and students from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) which helps SMEs promote and achieve growth through a range of digital tools and tactics.

Led by Daniel Livingstone, Project Manager, the Digital First ERDF team assisted with the creation of a Facebook page. The team also supplied three months’ worth of planning and implementation support, helping to promote the Sharrocks brand with high quality, tailored content and imagery in order to reach the right audience, and building up a new online network.

Benefits

Following the Digital First support, Sharrocks received several enquiries, and were subsequently approached by a new supplier. Furthermore, the skills and expertise imparted upon the team by Digital First have helped the business take management of social media in-house, using the new platforms to promote products and share news and updates with its growing audience.

Wilf Whittle, Business Development Manager at Sharrocks, said: “The help we received from the team at Digital First was really impressive. The team were professional to deal with and they expressed genuine interest in our business and how we operate. We work closely with growers and producers, marketing and distributing a full range of fresh produce. This helped them develop an understanding of what kind of audience we wanted to attract to get results through social media. I can now say we use it regularly with success, we’ve connected with more growers and products and we can link up to buyers of produce.”
