UCLan recently hosted an event to celebrate the achievements of those students who had successfully secured one of several prestigious scholarships – Chevening Scholarship; Commonwealth Shared Scholarship; a British Council GREAT Scholarships or a British Council India 70 Anniversary Scholarship.
The celebrations were hosted by Liz Bromley, (Deputy Vice Chancellor) who greeted each scholar congratulated them on their achievements and commending them on their bravery in traveling across the world to follow their dreams; and noted how inspiring some of their stories are on how they strived and pushed themselves to achieve everything they have and how it is a credit to both themselves and their families.
The event was attended by academic colleagues from the academic Schools in which the scholarship winners are enrolled; and by colleagues from the International Recruitment Team.
It was then the chance for two of the scholars to talk about their own personal experiences - Himanshu Prashar a BA (Hons) Sports Journalism student from India spoke about how his trip to UCLan was a very different experience than anything he had ever done before. It had been the first time he had ever been on a plane and how this journey was a colossal one for him and completely removed him from his comfort zone but also how he pushed himself to adapt and overcome anything.
We also heard from Sanad Bashir from Libya studying MSc DNA Profiling, who told us about his previous study in the Scotland and the challenges he had locating a masters that had the subject matter he was interested in. but also his journey brought him to UCLan through the Chevening Scholarship.
The event ended with an informal lunch and a lot of new friendships having been made.
