Rachel is a Third Year Community Leadership Student; she explains why she chose to come to UCLan Burnley to study her degree and how the support she has been offered gave her a positive experience with University life.
“UCLan Burnley is very accessible for me, I did my foundation degree here and had such a positive experience that I carried on with the top up. Last year I was diagnosed with dyslexia and all the teaching staff and support staff in the department have been amazing with me. If it was not for talking to a tutor of mine it might have still gone unnoticed but now it has allowed me to get the right support in place. The fear of writing my dissertation was massive when I began this year, I was worried about sending emails to potential employers and just had a lack of confidence in my writing skills but with all the support offered here, I managed to produce my dissertation and have a positive experience in my Top up Degree.”
Rachel has a big interest in welfare rights and working with people in the community. Her ideal job is to become a project manager within a community centre and is now working her way towards this goal.
“There has been many opportunities within this degree that have built up my skills, I am currently in talks with Thursby Community Centre, who are going to put me onto an IT course and teach me how to do funding for the centre and this will improve my skills to achieve my ideal job.”
