Sixteen years ago, Orooj settled in England and embarked upon starting a family with her new husband. After ten years of raising her family of three daughters (now 15, 11 and 5), Orooj decided it was time to do something for herself and looked into returning to study.

Runshaw College was within walking distance from her home, and she went along to learn about the courses on offer. Orooj enrolled onto the Certificate in Introduction to Higher Education to ease her back into study. Considering her interests and strengths, the course tutor suggested the BA (Hons) Community & Social Care: Policy & Practice was the most relevant progression route for Orooj and she continued along that path, studying the first year of the course at Runshaw College and the remainder at the UCLan Preston campus.

“The College allowed a very personal based approach and this felt familiar to me. The last three years have been phenomenal! The very well supported first year, made the transition from Runshaw to UCLan uninterrupted and smooth”.

The most enjoyable aspect of progressing to UCLan for Orooj was being part of a big institution “I love every minute of being at UCLan. The tutors were a great team; they understood that I had probably experienced a very different method of learning in Pakistan and they adapted their approach to accommodate that”.

Orooj completed her degree with first class honours and has gained the School of Social Work Prize for best dissertation. Orooj is now studying MA Social Policy at UCLan Preston.
