Jack Power

3rd Year BEng Motorsports Engineering student & McLaren Placement Student

What made you choose to study your course?

A keen interest in motorsport and generally how ‘stuff’ works.

What did you do on your placement?

  • Worked as an operations engineer at McLaren Racing.
  • Job title, company name and brief description about your duties: -
  • Kitting Intern – Trim & Assembly
  • McLaren Racing (Formula 1 Team)
  • To facilitate the workshop operators with everything they need to assemble components for the F1 cars

Please tell us about the journey that brought you to this position - including any previous work or relevant life experience:

Before university, I ran my own car sales business in Manchester. I wasn’t feeling fulfilled from what I was doing and wanted a new challenge. I sat down and noted what it was that interested me and what I would like to be involved in when I reach the age of 50/60/70. Motorsport has been a life-long passion of mine, so I set about finding a path to follow my dream. This ultimately led me to UCLan and their course in Motorsports Engineering.

What are your lasting memories of your time at UCLan?

Trying to get some sleep in the back of the UCLan race truck at Oulton Park in what felt like Arctic temperatures.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

Landing a placement at McLaren Racing. This has made me realise the path I have chosen is right. I cannot wait to see what the future has in stall.

What advice would you give to students wanting to do something similar, or what message would you like to give to those thinking of taking up study at UCLan?

Message to students would be; don’t give up looking for a placement, I must have applied for 20+ jobs but was persistent in my search. It eventually paid off. Make sure your CV is of a high standard, this is what will catch the eye of the potential employer.

Don’t be in the frame of mind of ‘it’s too late to go to university’, ‘how will I finance my studies’, ‘it takes too long’ and so on. I had all these doubts before I started, and I can say from first-hand experience that it will change your life for the best. All these worries are eradicated when you are on a path you genuinely want to follow. And there is plenty of support along the way.

Have you received any awards, appointments, had any publications or are there any other accomplishments you would like to tell us about?

I Played an important role in the process of building a Formula 1 car within 2 months at McLaren. This is something that needs to be experienced to be believed.

Working for an independent Rally outfit building and maintaining Ford Mk 1 & 2 Escort Rally cars. This has been a very interesting and exciting journey so far.

How has your experience on placement affected your attitude towards your course and your studies?

It’s given me a real sense of direction in terms of accomplishing my goals after University. Getting a job in Formula 1 has made me realise that the path that I am currently on can lead to great things if you put the hard work and effort in. it has made a dream become a reality and I am very much looking forward to my prospects after UCLan.

Has your degree, or your experiences at UCLan had any impact on your current employment or your life in general?

UCLan has ultimately led me to where I am today on my placement year at McLaren Racing. Its helped in focusing my time and effort into something I truly love and has opened many doors for me already. Going back to University at 27 years old has been the best thing I have done in my life to date. Thank you UCLan.
