After two years studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design at the University of Central Lancashire, Helen was offered the opportunity to take part in a placement year and accepted an exciting offer to work as a Junior Menswear Designer at the Matalan head office.
Helen is now working full-time as an integral member of the Matalan design team in Liverpool and is thoroughly enjoying her placement year, when asked what advice she would offer to a student thinking of working on placement she told us: “If you are unsure of whether to go for a placement, just do it! You learn so much amazing information and experience, make the most of every opportunity you have.”
Helen is now able to apply the knowledge that she has gained over two years at university to everyday working situations and feels much more confident both about her future in design and returning to university for her final year.
“Every day is different as a junior designer at Matalan, some days you are out on shopping trips researching for trends, other days you are hard working in the office designing tech packs for garments. Some days are spent in meetings with buyers or the design team, and some days I can be helping the design team with trend presentations.”
Helen also explained that she has developed transferable skills in other areas including IT: “I work with computers on a daily basis and have picked up some really important skills when making my design packs using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.”
Helen is thoroughly enjoying her time at Matalan and is looking forward to starting her final year at university with a deeper insight and experience in the industry. Thanks to her placement, Helen is definitely confident that a career in design is for her and would highly recommend it to any other students.
