Flying Start

Flying Start offers new students the chance to experience life at UCLan before starting in September. We know the transition to University life can be difficult and you may be nervous - we aim to help you understand what to expect whilst making a few new friends along the way.

The event is FREE for ALL students who have chosen us as their first choice University. All of your basic needs are covered so you’ll only need to pay for your travel to and from UCLan and some spending money for the evening social activities (residential event only).

On our residential events, we offer you the opportunity to stay on campus overnight in one of our Halls of Residence so you can experience what life at UCLan is really like. Or you can attend a non-residential event, which is ideal if you already know the area, or have commitments that prevent you from staying overnight. Whatever your needs, we will have something to suit. We aim to be fully inclusive so if you have any special requirements please let us know and we will do our best to support you.

Get a head start by meeting many new students who will be starting their courses at the same time as you; creating a network of supportive friends before you start your journey at UCLan.

Get to know all about the University and what it is like to be a student at UCLan through a variety of fun lectures, presentations and seminar groups led by our current student PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Supporters). Information is much more relatable if it comes from someone who has lived through the same experiences as you. That’s why our PALS are current 2nd and 3rd students here at UCLan.

Why attend Flying Start?

Research tells us that students who have attended a Flying Start event are far more likely to progress to the second year of their studies and will be more likely to complete their undergraduate degree.

By attending Flying Start, you’ll gain extensive knowledge of how to manage your life as a student and learn where to access help when you need it, through the Support Services with UCLan.
