  • Bursaries for Care Leavers

What is it?

UCLan offers a range of support and services to help all students, but especially students who may need a little extra assistance, because they are from care or estranged from their parents. We understand that at different stages of your university life you may need different types of support and advice, or none, depending on your own individual needs, and would tailor the support to suit you.

The Care Leaver Bursary is worth £1,000* per year. Students can apply from September for that academic year. The Bursary is paid in 4 instalments of £250. The exact payment dates will be notified nearer the time, however the approximate timings are below:

  • End of September (or date of application, whichever is sooner)
  • Beginning of December
  • Beginning of March
  • End of May. 

Am I eligible?

In order to qualify for a Care Leaver Bursary, students would need to meet the following criteria:

  • UK Home student
  • Enrolled on a full-time, undergraduate UCLan programme
  • Care Leaver –defined as in care for at least 13 weeks, spanning your 16th birthday.
  • Under 25 on the first day of the academic year you started your current course of study.

(If you do not qualify as a Care Leaver, but you are estranged from your parents or have been resident in a Foyer, please contact the Care Leaver Advisor as you may be able to apply for support through the Access to Learning Fund.)

How can I apply?

If you would like to apply for a Care Leaver Bursary, please complete the online application and provide evidence as requested in the Care Leavers Bursary Application Form (.pdf 40.2kb)

We have a dedicated Care Leaver Advisor, Hannah Small, who you can contact with any questions you may have, guide you through any aspect of University life, and refer you to the right people where appropriate. We can also make contact with your Social Worker and help with your pathway plan if you request this.
