Bursaries and Scholarships at UCLan

UCLan Schemes for 2012/13

The University will be offering the UCLan Advantage Scheme for new students in 2012/13, details of which can be found here. Students already enrolled with the University who continue their studies in the 2012/13 Academic Year will remain on the schemes available when they started their course and will not be eligible for the new Programme.

UCLan Sport Scholarship 2012

You may be eligible to apply for one of our ‘Excellence in Sport’ Scholarships.  Applications are particularly invited from cycling, golf, rugby union, rugby league, netball and women’s football, but a number are available for any sport from the list below.  The Scholarships are worth £4,000 and will be paid in instalments over a three year period: £2000 in year 1, £1000 in year 2 and £1000 in year 3.  The Excellence in Sport Scholarship relates to the sport you might be competing in, and not the course you have applied for.

Candidates will need to demonstrate a level of excellence and will be assessed according to prescribed criteria:

  • Cycling: Applications in terms of Road/Track cyclists are invited from Junior 1/2 riders or from at least 2nd Category Senior riders (1st Cat/Elite riders would be preferred).  In terms of Mountain Biking applications are invited from ‘accomplished’ riders from either the Junior or Senior ranks (evidence of high level performance will be necessary).
  • Golf: As a minimum, Female applicants would be expected to have a handicap of 5 or better.  As a minimum, Male applicants would be expected to have a handicap of 2 or better.
  • Netball: Applications are invited from players that are part of regional/national talent development programmes/pathways.
  • Women’s Football: applications are particularly invited from players who are attached to a recognised Centre of Excellence.  Students would be expected to be playing within the Combination Leagues or above.
  • Rugby Union/Rugby League: Rugby Union – at least county representation or above.  Rugby League – at least Service Area or above.
  • Additional Sports: Applications are invited from students who have at least achieved regional representative honours (i.e. ‘county’ or equivalent depending on structures within each sport) in one of the following sports: Cricket, Fencing, Football, Hockey, Netball, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Trampolining, Athletics, Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, Karate, Table Tennis and Basketball.

Scholarship students are provided with a package of benefits ; in return you will be expected to represent UCLan in the various competitions run by British Universities and Colleges Sport, at your currently specified level of performance.

Extent of Scholarships:

  • 20 to be awarded
  • Scholarship provided: £4,000 in total - £2,000 in year 1 and £1,000 in years 2 and 3
  • Paid in instalments throughout the academic year, Student must remain enrolled and progressing on programme of study

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The students will need to demonstrate a current level of excellence or the potential for excellence. Applications will be invited for these scholarships and candidates will either be assessed according to prescribed criteria or will be asked to attend trials depending on the sport
  • It is expected that those awarded Excellence in Sport Scholarships will play a full part in raising the standards of performance of the Students' Union sports teams and thus be fully committed to training and competing for the University
  • The applicant must choose UCLan as their first choice
  • The student must be on a full-time HEFCE funded Undergraduate course paying the full fee of £9000
  • Resident in the UK or Europe
  • The student is enrolled at the University (i.e. not withdrawn or suspended) at the time of each payment

How to apply: Download an application form and complete this to demonstrate how you meet the listed criteria.  Additional supporting material can be included in order to validate your level of performance.  Please forward your application by Thursday 26th April 2012 to the address given on the form.  Successful applicants will be notified in writing by the end of May or as near as possible after that date. 
 All applications will be assessed by representatives of the UClanSport group and potentially representatives from the respective National Governing Bodies. If more applicants achieve the minimum criteria than awards are available, then an Excellence in Sports panel will meet to make the final decision.  Those students who are successful and awarded will need to register their bank details online via MYUCLan after they have enrolled in 2012. Further information will be made available to those successful once they have enrolled
.
Applicants may also be eligible for the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). UCLan is an accredited TASS delivery centre; these awards are nominated by the respective National Governing Bodies.

UCLan Schemes for 2011/12 Entry

For the 2011/12 Academic Year the University is offering a range of Bursary and Scholarship schemes for new students as listed below.

University Bursary

  • Bursary Provided: £338* per qualifying student in each year of study on a means tested basis
  • Payment will be made in 1 instalment at the end of each academic year typically during July.  
  • Only students who apply for and receive a full maintenance grant from Student Finance England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be considered for the Bursary

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The student must be on full-time HEFCE funded Undergraduate course paying the full fee of £3375
  • Resident in the UK
  • In receipt of a full means tested maintenance award from Student Finance (the Student Loan Company)
  • Have a means tested household income of less than £25,000
  • Enrolled with the University (i.e. not withdrawn or suspended) at the time of payment
  • Not be eligible for any other Bursary Scheme which may be available
  • Not identified as ELQ (i.e. the student has not already received an award at the same level or higher than that to which they are enrolling)
  • How to Apply: Students must apply to SFE for a means tested maintenance grant. Students also need to log onto the University's electronic system MYUCLan, which they will be given access to once enrolled to register their bank details in order to receive payment. To do this students need to go to the Student Lobby and from the Useful Tools list select MYUCLan. Students should then follow the Select Services for Students link followed by the Scholarships and Bursaries link. Students can then complete the online registration and submit their details. The next time students access this page they will see their status has been updated. *£338 is subject to change each academic year.

All applications will be assessed by representatives of the UClanSport group and potentially representatives from the respective National Governing Bodies. Those students who are successful and awarded will need to register their bank details online via MYUCan after they have enrolled in 2011. Further information will be made available to those successful once they have enrolled.
    Applicants may also be eligible for the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). TASS provides a scholarship equivalent to £3500 of support per year. UCLan is an accredited TASS delivery centre; these awards are nominated by the respective National Governing Bodies.
