Services We Offer

VALNOW [Virtual Academic Library of the North-West] offers a range of library and information services, which would normally only be available from the University's main campus library in Preston, to students on UCLan Higher Education courses at our Partner Institutions around the North West.

- Request a Journal Article

- Request a Book

- Staff Forum

Please note: if you are studying at a non-FEC which does not have a staffed library service, you should use the Distance Learning Service to request materials to be delivered to you directly.

Book Loan

If you identify a loanable book (or other item) from a search of the University Library Search, and wish to borrow it, you should notify your College librarian. S/he will then contact the University and the book will be posted to your College. Your College library will notify you when it is ready for collection, and it will be issued to you for a fixed loan period as with books from the College library.

Alternatively, you can use the online book request form.

If you still need the book at the end of loan period you should ask your College librarian for it to be renewed; as a fine will be charged on any VALNOW item returned overdue.

If the item you require is shown to be out on loan at the time of your search, your College librarian will be able to reserve it for you and it will be posted to your College as soon as it is available.

Please note that, owing to existing pressures on the University Library's stock, only items having the loan category 'normal' or 'short' will be available under VALNOW. Items having the category 'reference' cannot be posted out to Colleges.

Please also note that you will be invoiced for the full cost of replacement, in the event of loss of, or damage to, any item supplied under VALNOW.

Catalogue Access

You can search the Library Search for books, journals and non-print media which you require for your course. Searching is possible by author, title and subject. The catalogue records are very informative and show, in the case of loanable items, how many copies of each title the library has, their loan type (normal, short or reference), whether each is in the library or on loan and, if on loan, when it is due back.

Book Loan Periods to Valnow Users

Please note the extended loan period is only valid when ordering items via the online VALNOW Service. Items borrowed using the self-issue machines will be subject to standard loan periods.

Normal Loan items - 5 weeks* (Renewals of 4 weeks)

Short Loan items - 2 weeks* (Renewals of 1 week)

*The initial extended loan periods are to allow for postage times for both receipt and return of the items.

Renewals: a maximum of 4 renewals are allowed, however if an item has been reserved by another borrower it must be returned by the due date.

Online Databases/Electronic Resources

One of the advantages of VALNOW is that you have access to an increasing range of electronic resources: some indexes, some full-text.

A list of available e-journals can be accessed from the Journals Finder service.

Subject databases which index the contents of these journals can also be found on the Library web pages. Look at the databases recommended in the Subject Guides or select from the E-Databases A-Z list.

Your College Librarian will be able to show you how to use these databases, and how to capture the results of your searches for further editing.

If full-text is not available, copies of articles can be requested from VALNOW (see Journal article supply above), but only if the University Library's catalogue indicates those titles are available.

Please remember that these services are available for academic work only and must not be used for social or personal purposes.

Journal Article Supply

If you require a photocopy of a journal article for your course, check here in the Library Search to establish whether the journal you require is included. If so, you should notify your College librarian. S/he will then contact the University and the article will be supplied to your College. Your College library will notify you when it is ready.

Alternatively, you can use the online journal request form.

Reference Enquiries

Any reference or subject enquiries you may have should be referred to your College library staff in the first instance, but if they find your library does not have the appropriate resources to provide a full answer, more difficult or unusual queries may be passed on to the University Library.

Your College librarian will make a detailed note of your enquiry, and then contact VALNOW, who will then liaise with the appropriate specialist Information Officer, and attempt to obtain a full response. This process will probably not be possible while you wait, so your College librarian will contact you when a reply has been received.

Before you contact us you may wish to have a look at the Subject Guides produced by our Faculty Librarians.
