Simeon is passionate about international issues and higher education. He was motivated to join the iSLanDs team because of these exciting challenges and the fact that he strives for concrete results and continuous improvement. In using effective interaction with diverse populations internationally, at all levels from grassroots to academia and government, Simeon prides himself on consistently maintaining excellent relationships with both internal staff and international partners.
Simeon was brought up by his Deaf parents and educated at Burwood Park School for Deaf boys in Surrey, which is now closed. Over the years, Simeon has always challenged and overcome barriers in education and has achieved a Higher National Diploma in Computer Studies at Sheffield City Polytechnic 1987 (later renamed Sheffield Hallam University), a Certificate in Education (Post-Compulsory) at the University of Leicester in 1996 and a Master’s Degree in Social Enterprise at Liverpool John Moores University in 2006.
Simeon’s most memorable experience was when he was a Philippine VSO volunteer from February 1997 to March 2000. During this time, he was Project Director with the Philippine Federation of the Deaf (focusing on Community Development including Leadership and Gender) and a lecturer at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Manila (teaching Leadership in Sports and Curriculum Development). This was how he became attracted to working with international peers and consequently learned International Sign, Filipino Sign Language and American Sign Language.
