Rod has spent much of his career in senior management roles in the events and hospitality industry in various sectors and in both private and public sector organisations, which enables him to put the academic theory into practical context. In 1987, in addition to his full-time job, he began part-time employment at Blackburn College teaching Food, Wine and Bar Service and Management, a role he maintained for 6 years before becoming Catering Manager at UCLan in 1993. During his employment at UCLan he began studying for a BA in Hospitality Studies, graduating in 1999 and following this with a Postgraduate Diploma in Business & Professional Studies and subsequently an MBA. Rod left UCLan Catering Services in 2005, to begin part-time work as a Service and Supplier Manager, with SNUPI Ltd where he was responsible for managing food purchasing contracts for many Scottish and North Western England universities and colleges, and where he organised and facilitated a wide ranging training programme for universities and colleges throughout the UK; the training programme included organising events, exhibitions and conferences. At the same time, Rod began working as a part-time lecturer at UCLan in SSTO and Lancashire Business School and he was Director of his own consultancy company, specialising in service quality, operational management, purchasing and team building. In 2008, Rod entered full-time Higher Education initially as a Lecturer and latterly as a Senior Lecturer in SSTO, specialising in Hospitality and Event Management, particularly Live Events.
