Steve recently organised the annual conference for the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). Steve is responsible for the academic management of the Division of Sport, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, encompassing the Centre for Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES). He is also course leader for the Bsc (Hons) Personal Fitness Training. As a BASES accredited sports scientist, he also serves on the accreditation committee for that learned body. His research focuses on sport and exercise performance, in particular strength and conditioning and paediatric work physiology.

Current interests are related to elite sports performance, health-related fitness and physical activity in schools and the workplace. I currently investigating the following areas:
1. Ergogenicity of supplementary calcium to assist endurance performance
2. Physiology of ultra endurance mountain biking/repeated marathon running
3. The influence of growth and development on the performance characteristics of elite rugby league players
4. Game dynamics and notational analysis in soccer
5. The use of biomarkers to determine oxidative stress
6. Next generation gaming and changing the physical activity of children.
Research links with Liverpool John Moores University into the area of children's physical activity.
