Dr Sub Reddy is an Analytical Chemist and heads the Smart Materials Research and Biosensors Group. He is developing smart biomimetic materials for use in disease diagnostics and the development of novel, polymer-based therapeutic agents. He has a particular interest in developing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for biomolecular recognition.
Sub Reddy undertook a PhD with Pankaj Vadgama in the University of Manchester, where he developed membrane-based electrochemical biosensors for metabolites. Moving to the University of Wales, Bangor he conducted a postdoctoral research fellowship and researched acoustic wave (QCM) techniques for the development of biosensors and hydrogel characterisation (1994-1997). He also gained postdoctoral experience of electronic nose technologies for measuring volatile organics at UMIST (1997-1998) before he was promoted to his first Faculty position at the University of Surrey (1998). He went on to become a Senior Lecturer in Applied Analytical Chemistry there (2009) before relocating to the University of Central Lancashire (2016). He has had a long interest in developing smart materials. He also has expertise in the development of electrochemical, optical chip-based and quartz crystal-based biosensors for medicine, food and the environment.
His lead unique and original contributions to science to date have been (1) the first publication of protein crystallisation facilitated by molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs); (2) physical characterisation of MIPs capable of protein recognition and (3) the signal amplification of quartz crystal based biosensor strategies.
His smart materials work has resulted in the filing of patent applications, over 45 original paper publications and numerous invited talks at international conferences and workshops. His current funding is from the Wellcome Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, RSC and NERC, the Royal Society and British Council. The latter two are with international collaborators in Brazil and India respectively. He has very active International collaborations with Canada (University of Guelph), USA (NCSU), Brazil (University of Sao Paulo) and India (SV University).
Reddy is also a Series co-Editor of a 10 Book Series on Detection Science. He is the Editor of one book in the Series entitled Advanced Synthetic Materials in Detection Science. Reddy has peer reviewed for both national and international grant awarding bodies and journals (in the fields of analytical chemistry and materials science) and given expert commentary in the New Scientist. His research has also been featured in BBC News on-line, Nature Methods, New Scientist and Trends in Analytical Chemistry. He has also been invited multiple times and currently serves as an expert EPSRC Panel Member, since 2006 covering calls in Chemistry, Materials, Crime Prevention and RC/RSC studentships.
He is involved in the public communication of science/research through stand-up comedy (Bright Club) and has also appeared on BBC4 and BBC2 ‘Some boffins with jokes’ as well as at the Edinburgh Fringe (2013) and Winchester Science Festival 2014!
