Introduction To Psychology Courses

The School of Psychology offers an exciting and flexible undergraduate programme of Honours degree courses based in the modern, multi-million-pound Darwin Building. You can study for a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Psychology, with routes in Applied Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology, Neuropsychology or Sport Psychology. All routes have a common Year 1 that introduces you to the main areas of psychology. In Year 2 you develop your knowledge of these areas further but may also study a specialist area of your choice – Applied, Forensic, Health, Neuro or Sport. In Year 3, you can either return to studying a range of areas in more depth, or continue with your chosen route, doing your project in an appropriate topic and selecting modules that reflect your specialist interest.

For Courses in Sport and Exercise, Nutrition, Sport Science and Sport Technology follow the CASES navigation from the Psychology home page.

All of these BSc degrees are recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as being eligible for Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR), provided a degree classification of lower second or above is achieved. This is the level of membership required to go on to postgraduate study on a BPS accredited professional course.

We have three such accredited Masters courses, the MSc in Forensic Psychology,  MSc in Health Psychology and the MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology. These professional courses are proving to be very popular both with students who have taken their first degree here and want to continue their studies with us, and with students who come from other universities.

We also offer a Masters programme for those who wish to continue their studies in Psychology at a higher level but do not want to follow a professional route. These include MSc Psychology, MSc Psychology of Child Development, MSc Social Psychology, and MSc Research Methods. All applicants are expected to have a good (Upper Second or above) Honours degree in Psychology on a course approved by the BPS for GBR. Successful MSc students may apply to continue their research to doctorate level (PhD). Alternatively, we do accept applications from prospective PhD students who do not wish to study for a MSc. (See the Research pages for details of doctorate students and research supervisors.)

Some undergraduate students want to study psychology and another subject, for instance Psychology and Criminology under the joint honours programme, or Psychology and either one or two other subjects in Year 1 from a wide choice under the Combined Honours programme. This is a good choice if you are not sure which subject you prefer, or if you have a particular career in mind where both Psychology and your other subject would be useful. Furthermore, it is possible to study enough Psychology to gain BPS GBR. If you are interested in studying Psychology and Biological Sciences then it is worth considering our BSc Neuroscience.

For those who already have a degree that included some Level 1 psychology or who have a non-accredited Psychology degree, we offer the Graduate Diploma in Psychological Studies. This allows BPS GBR and so entry onto professional psychology courses. And if you have never studied any psychology before, you could apply as an Associate Student to take some of our Level 1 modules before entry to the Graduate Diploma.

With over twelve hundred students in the School, our courses are very popular, and all of them can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis.
