West Cumbria

West Cumbria is an area rich in heritage and contrasting landscapes, lying between the mountains of the Lake District to the East and the Irish Sea to the West. The coastal town of Whitehaven is located on the west coast of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District National Park between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness. This Georgian town was one of the first post-renaissance planned towns in the country and is only one of 40 Gem Towns in England. Many historians believe that the grid-system of streets in New York was inspired by Whitehaven.
