The School of Language and Global Studies offers courses in English language and linguistics; British Sign Language and deaf studies; modern foreign languages; and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), amongst many others.
Recognised by industry professionals, our courses deliver a strong emphasis on practical and vocational development which help students maximise their learning potential and provides our graduates with excellent employability skills. Across the School, we have a great history in teaching our subjects: we are still leading the way with innovative, industry-accredited courses; since 1994, the British Sign Language and Deaf Studies team have been at the forefront in teaching, research and training relating to deaf people and those who work with them; and we started the first and only Institute of Korean Studies outside London.
The Worldwise Learning Centre is an excellent resource providing international experiences to students and is home to the state-of-the-art Brahler Interpreting Suite. Through the Confucius Institute, UCLan works with Beijing International Studies University and Hanban to promote Chinese culture and language.
Our cutting-edge research informs the curriculum and our courses are deigned to equip students with the creativity, knowledge and skills that industry needs.
As a student within the School, you will have receive a number of international opportunities. In recent years, the School has sent teams of students to Guangzhou, China and Kenya to cover local communities and events; BSL and Deaf Studies students have spent time studying at universities in Italy, the Czech Republic, Finland and the US; and we regularly host students and visiting lecturers from Holland, Poland, Austria, Germany and the USA as well as many other countries. Our student exchange programmes include countries such as the USA, China, Australia and Canada, and new exchange partners have been developed in Hong Kong, Norway, India, Singapore and Qatar.
Throughout the School, we understand the importance of strong industry links. Our academics are practitioners with many years’ experience in the sector, therefore our professional development courses, workshops and networking events are current, relevant and supported by industry.”
