Welcome to Sociology

Sociology involves the study of society. In other words, sociologists seek knowledge and understanding of the workings, impact and influence of a wide range of social groups and social institutions – operating together these form a ‘social order’ or ‘society’.
Sociologists undertake research at the level of society as a whole, but are also interested in the everyday ‘face to face’ interactions and encounters between people within these social groups and institutions (such as the family, school and workplace).
You will be taught by a team of research-active sociologists who offer dynamic and exciting topics to study. Research and teaching are often linked as the following examples show:
Trish Byrne-Roberts is currently leading a research project on exploring strategies for embedding employability within the curriculum. She is actively engaged in Community Engagement and Knowledge Transfer activities and is currently working on a research project which explores and promotes the work of the social welfare charity Recycling Lives.
