Master of Arts (by Research) Studentship in the School of Language and Global Studies

Applications are invited for a full time MA (by Research) studentship in the School of Language and Global Studies. The studentship is tenable for up to 1 year full-time (subject to satisfactory progress) and will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference in tuition fees.

It is expected the successful applicant will commence 1 July 2018.

Project Description

In the UK Government’s recent REF 2014 assessment of research activity, 70% of outputs were judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in Modern Languages and Linguistics in the School. Based in Preston in Lancashire, the School has a number of research centres and institutes, including the International Institute for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies, the International Institute of Korean Studies, the Vladimir Vysotsky Centre for Russian Studies and the Worldwise Centre (focusing on language-based area studies, MFL and applied linguistics).

We welcome research proposals on any of the following or related areas:

  • Computer-assisted language learning (particularly with relation to project-based learning, immersive environments, learning analytics, students with learning disabilities, health and well-being)
  • English language testing and assessment
  • Russian Studies (particularly gender and identity, literature and film, comparative literature, Russian as a foreign language)
  • Second Language Learning (particularly with relation to identity, social class, school-based language education policy)
  • Second Language Pragmatics and intercultural communication

Candidates should have (or expect to have formally been awarded by 1 July 2018) a UK Bachelor’s degree at 2:1 or above in a related area (or equivalent qualification).

EU and International applicants will need to hold an English Language qualification at IELTS 7.0 (no sub-score below 6.5) or equivalent qualification.
