This project investigates the Neolithic landscape outside and to the east of the Neolithic henge and stone circle World Heritage monument of Avebury, Wiltshire. This part of the Avebury landscape has received scant attention by previous researchers. A pilot fieldwork project has begun by focussing on the field known as Rough Leaze, just outside the eastern entrance to the henge. Our excavations have shown possible pre-henge Mesolithic/Early Neolithic features and material culture. This evidence indicates that processes of enculturation of the natural environment through modification and use of tree throws took place here, showing that this area held some importance before the construction of the massive henge monument. Research continues to investigate prehistoric activities outside the henge with ongoing survey and excavations towards the east.
