UCLan has been recognised in the 2015 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has been recognised in the 2015 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

The THE Awards are widely recognised as the Oscars of the higher education sector and this year UCLan has been shortlisted in two categories: Excellence and Innovation in the Arts and Entrepreneurial University of the Year.

The UCLan application for the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts category relates to the work of Professor David Binns and Dr Alasdair Bremner who have created the University’s first spin-out business, Alusid. The duo have perfected a process that combines crushed recycled glass and ceramics to create a sustainable and unique product made from up to 100 percent recycled waste. Applications are wide ranging and include facing bricks, tiling systems, building cladding and kitchen work-surfaces.

"For this University to be shortlisted in two categories is a marvellous achievement. It is recognition which our staff and students richly deserve and I hope their efforts are rewarded when the overall winners are announced later this year.”

In the Entrepreneurial University of the Year category the University’s application highlighted the steady stream of new, innovative ideas emerging via UCLan’s innovation programmes including the Idea Investment Voucher Scheme, the Crowdfunding Platform, and the UCLan Ventures and Innovation Fund.

The University also highlighted its graduate start-up success: UCLan graduate businesses account for just over 1 in 20 of UK total.

Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Mike Thomas said: “Every year these awards attract hundreds of entries that exemplify the talent, dedication and innovation of individuals and teams throughout the university sector. For this University to be shortlisted in two categories is a marvellous achievement. It is recognition which our staff and students richly deserve and I hope their efforts are rewarded when the overall winners are announced later this year.”

The winners will be declared at an event in London on Thursday, 26 November 2015.
