Kieran wins two prizes at local business event

A University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) graduate has been recognised for his business talents by winning two prizes at this year’s Red Rose Awards which celebrates business success in Lancashire.

More than 1,100 high flyers of Lancashire business celebrated commerce and industry across the county at the fourth annual Lancashire Business View Red Rose Awards.

UCLan sports coaching graduate Kieran Fletcher was awarded two prizes for his business FUNDA which promotes sports, education and creative play to children.

Kieran and his colleagues won the Caring Employer of The Year Award and the main prize of the night, the Publisher’s Choice Award. FUNDA was selected as the winner of this prestigious prize out of 1,200 other eligible county businesses.

Creative Director of FUNDA Kieran said: “Both prizes were unexpected and the last one was the biggest award of the night; I wasn’t ready for it and didn’t even have chance to put my bow tie back on for the winning photos.”

FUNDA is the North West’s largest children’s sports coaching and activity provider and now employs 28 full-time coaches who deliver programmes to get the most inactive children active. Kieran originally ran his business out of UCLan’s Northern Lights business hub which provides supports to fledgling student and graduate businesses.

He added: “I would like to thank the UCLan Northern Lights Team for all their support. The UCLan Northern Lights programme gave me the entrepreneurial desire to start up my business and without the team’s support at start-up it would have been difficult to structure my company and protect all intellectual property.”

John Duckworth, Business Advisor Northern Lights Business Support, commented: “The Northern Lights team would like to congratulate Kieran and all his staff at FUNDA for winning not one but two of these prestigious awards. They are well deserved and reflect the hard work FUNDA has put in over the last three years to lay the foundations for future growth.”

Richard Slater, publisher of Lancashire Business View, the magazine behind the awards said: “The Red Rose Awards is a right good Lancashire do. We make a lot of noise, we eat some great food and we make a big fuss of all the businesses in the county that are making waves in their industries. We’ve unearthed some great stories and it’s great to be able to shout about them.”

The guests attended the glittering ceremony at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. TV and radio personality Graham Liver compared the event, and awards were handed out across 25 categories.

The Red Rose Awards is the event which takes business seriously, but does so with a smile on its face. Entertainment was provided by the NHS 100 Voice Choir, Blowjangles and the Ian Hooper Band.
