Dr Nigel Harrison appointed as Chair of the North West Council of Deans for Health

A leading University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) executive has been appointed as Chair of the North West Council of Deans for Health.

Dr Nigel Harrison, who is the Executive Dean of UCLan’s College of Health and Social Care, was appointed to the prestigious role last month. He has initially taken the position for two years and will combine it with his role at UCLan.

He said: “I was very pleased to have been nominated and selected by my peers. It’s pleasing to have that vote of confidence and I’m looking forward to working with colleagues at a regional and national level.”

“The Council reviews implementation of national and regional strategies and policies and can raise concerns about issues which adversely impact the delivery of healthcare education.”

Dr Harrison, who was previously vice-chair of the North West Council of Deans of Health, will lead and chair the board and events involving Deans and Heads from 11 North West Higher Education health providers. The group represents the health faculties which provide education and research for nursing, midwifery and the allied health professions.

The aim of the North West Council of Deans of Health is to influence health and higher education policies that impact on the development of an expert healthcare professional workforce across the region.

He said: “The Council reviews implementation of national and regional strategies and policies and can raise concerns about issues which adversely impact the delivery of healthcare education.”

His new role will also see him acting as co-chair of the Strategic Higher Education Partnership Meetings together with Ged Byrne and Neil McLauchlan, from Higher Education North West.
