Tracy Dewhurst is proof that even those at the top of their profession can enhance their career through postgraduate study.

Tracy, from Poulton-le-Fylde, is head of communications for Defence Business Services, part of the Ministry of Defence, but has just completed an MA in Strategic Communications at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

She felt that although she had worked in communications for more than 18 years, she would benefit from formal training and an understanding of the theory behind the practice.

"I was able to complete the course over four years and continue working. I even planned my wedding and got married while studying."

However, she was concerned that the demands of her busy job – which involves managing communications both internally and to a huge customer base including the serving military, veterans and reservists – would make postgraduate study impossible.

Tracy said: “I came across the MA in Strategic Communications at UCLan and it was perfect for what I wanted. I was able to complete the course over four years and continue working. I even planned my wedding and got married while studying – in hindsight that part was quite stressful!”

Tracy sadly lost her father while studying for her MA, but still continued with the course and says she feels both proud and relieved to be graduating.

“All too often communications is viewed as being somewhat pink and fluffy, but I feel the theory I’ve learnt has given me the confidence and credibility to ensure it’s taken seriously at board level."

“It was hard work at times but I enjoyed the course,” she added. “All too often communications is viewed as being somewhat pink and fluffy, but I feel the theory I’ve learnt has given me the confidence and credibility to ensure it’s taken seriously at board level.

“My favourite part was the technology element. Technology has changed the way we communicate and it was fascinating to understand more about how we can use things like social media, which can make or break a company.

“UCLan’s Strategic Communications course has an excellent reputation, as does Mary Welch who was my lecturer. Now I’m just looking forward to putting what I’ve learnt into practice – and having a bit of a rest!”

Tracy was one of 4,000 students who graduated in front of family and friends at Preston’s Guild Hall this week.
