The work of Charles Dickens is being celebrated by an academic at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
Dr Theresa Saxon, Subject Leader in Literature and Cultures, is presenting a lecture called ‘Dickens and Drama’ in celebration of the bicentenary of his birth.
The event will take place in the Community History Library, inside Preston’s Harris Library, on 11 February at 2.00pm, as part of the Preston Guild celebrations.
“Charles Dickens, one of England’s most prolific and famous novelists, declared: ‘Every writer of fiction, though he may not adopt the dramatic form, writes in effect for the stage.’"
Dr Saxon said: “Charles Dickens, one of England’s most prolific and famous novelists, declared: ‘Every writer of fiction, though he may not adopt the dramatic form, writes in effect for the stage.’ This talk will explore Charles Dickens and his relationship with drama through an examination of his dramatic writings, his novels and short stories, and also adaptations of his writings for the stage.”
An exhibition of books and images relating to Charles Dickens life and works will also be on display in the Community History Library until June 2012.
