UCLan opens doors to showcase final year work

Talented students from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have shown just how creative they can be at a free annual exhibition showcasing the very best of final year work in architecture, design, fashion and fine art.

The UCLan Degree Shows are open to the general public, schools, colleges and businesses for the next week until Saturday 20 June on the University’s Preston Campus. Visitors will see an eclectic range of work from across all disciplines that is entertaining, thought-provoking, imaginative and inventive.

This includes a Freud inspired forest-like sculpture, an award-winning fashion promotion project on a new ethically aware and eco-friendly water product, design projects to create the caravan of the future in partnership with Lunar Caravans, ceramic work inspired by nostalgia of the 1930s and 40s and a moving animation film about a chance meeting later in life with a childhood bully.

“The UCLan Degree Shows allow us to share the amazing talent of our creative students which never fails to impress year on year. I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and enjoy the exhibitions."

UCLan senior fashion lecturer and Degree Show organiser Paresh Parmar said this year’s shows have lived up to the high standard of work expected at the popular annual event. “The UCLan Degree Shows allow us to share the amazing talent of our creative students which never fails to impress year on year.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and enjoy the exhibitions which give the public a great opportunity to see what excellent and unique work these students have produced across a wide range of disciplines.”

In addition, nine students were rewarded through the Creative Focus Awards event sponsored by Creative Lancashire. The awards are held each year at the beginning of the UCLan Degree Shows to recognise the most outstanding work from each discipline of architecture, design, fashion, fine art, media and performance. Each winner will be given the opportunity for one to one time with a relevant creative industries professional courtesy of Creative Lancashire.

The creative gongs were handed to Jade Caroll, James Wright, Dan Bavin, Sandija Sadovska and Jessica Violet Challis, Cassie Douthwaite, Alan Hudson-Frost, Theodore James and Samantha Dyson by UCLan Vice-Chancellor Professor Mike Thomas and Chairman of Creative Lancashire Charles Hadcock.

“I am amazed by the constant stream of talent which flows from our University and it is only right we celebrate this flair at special awards ceremonies like this."

Professor Thomas said: “I am amazed by the constant stream of talent which flows from our University and it is only right we celebrate this flair at special awards ceremonies like this.

“The winning students have demonstrated the skills, drive and motivation to succeed and I’m sure in the years to come their abilities will shine through; just as it has done for so many of our graduates from the creative disciplines who have studied here over the years.”

The campus wide display of work, from students studying in the School of Art, Design and Performance and the Grenfell-Baines School of Architecture, Construction and Environment, is spread out across four UCLan buildings.

Admission is free to all the exhibitions and all are welcome. Car parking is also free on the University’s car parks during exhibition times and visitors can download and print a parking permit to display in their windscreen by visiting the event’s website.
