UCLan plays host to annual event

Preston’s Guild City Games has been hailed as a huge success as over 1,350 took part in sporting activities over three days across five sites.

Aimed at businesses and organisations from Preston and the surrounding area, the Games were organised in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Preston City Council, Shout Network and NWL Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Preston’s College.

UCLan hosted many of the Games’ events at UCLan Sports Arena and Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre.

The University took gold in the athletics event, silver in netball and rugby and bronze in the dragon boat race. Preston City Council scooped the top prize in the football competition at UCLan Sports Arena. Other winners included BAE Systems, who won in the badminton mixed doubles at Sir Tom Finney Sport Centre.

“It was a brilliant day despite the weather! The atmosphere was fantastic and we have had some great feedback already.”

The Academic Director of Sport at UCLan, Dr Adrian Ibbetson, commented: “UCLan is proud to once again be involved in the Preston City Games which we see as a legacy from the European City of Sport and Guild year. The event does a great job of promoting physical activity and sports participation amongst the local business community which of course has benefits for the individuals and the organisations involved.”

Jimmy Khan, Head of Sport and Leisure at Preston City Council, added: “It was a brilliant day despite the weather! The atmosphere was fantastic and we have had some great feedback already.”
