UCLan celebrates Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mayor and Mayoress of Preston joined over 100 students to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival at the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan’s) Confucius Institute.

The local dignitaries, Guild Mayor Councillor Carl Crompton and the Guild Mayoress Councillor Mrs Linda Crompton, met UCLan students of all nationalities on Monday, 1 October as they celebrated the traditional Chinese holiday together with live Chinese music, food, karaoke and kite flying.

Colourful Chinese lanterns added to the spectacle, as they were used for ‘lantern riddle games’, a very popular pastime at Chinese lantern festivals.

Miss Yanfeng Wu, a student from Shanghai on the International Business Communication final year course.

“The celebration was the perfect way to bring Chinese and western students together, helping Chinese students to integrate with their western counterparts with an ideal opportunity for our local students to learn about Chinese culture.”

Feixia Yu, Director of UCLan’s Confucius Institute, said: “The Guild Mayor particularly enjoyed the Chinese music. He even tried his hand at playing the Guzheng (Chinese harp).

“Our Chinese students were excited to have their photos taken with the Mayor and Mayoress. One [Chinese] student, who has only been in Preston for a month, said she felt really fortunate to have participated in two celebrations – the Preston Guild and now the Mid-Autumn Festival.”

Fexia added: “The celebration was the perfect way to bring Chinese and western students together, helping Chinese students to integrate with their western counterparts with an ideal opportunity for our local students to learn about Chinese culture.”
