A maxillofacial technician at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust been awarded a prize for being the top student in his year following his studies at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Andrew Tinkler secured a distinction in his final exams at UCLan to become a Clinical Dental Technician and has won the £100 Schottlander prize which is awarded to the best-performing student on the course.

Andrew was mentored by Trust consultant Victoria Hadden who trained him in clinical skills during the two-year course.

“A clinical dental technician can provide complete dentures directly to patients independently of a dentist so it combines clinical and technical skills,” she said. “The whole team is delighted at Andrew’s success and his results are well-deserved as he has worked very hard.”

Andrew said he decided to self-fund, along with the North Western Deanery, his two year part-time course in the hope that he could become a more integrated member of the clinical dental team. “It’s great to now be using my new skills within the maxillofacial department and in the wider dental community,” he said.

His tutor at UCLan’s School of Medicine and Dentistry Liam O’Brian said Andrew was a pleasure to teach and now has a rewarding career in front of him.

“He fully engaged with all aspects of the course and consistently produced work of a very high standard. He is a worthy winner of the Schottlander prize which is awarded to the student who has contributed most to the course.

“Andrew was superbly supported in his placement by his mentor Ms Victoria Hadden. I would like to thank her and all the other mentors who contributed so much to the students’ success.”
