Accrington student receives the Priory Hospital Preston Nursing Award

A nursing graduate at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has been rewarded for her outstanding work at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Kerry Ward received the Priory Hospital Preston Nursing Award recently from representatives of UCLan and The Priory Group, an independent hospital based in Preston which specialises in the management of acute psychiatric illness and who sponsored the awards.

During her Pre-registration Diploma in Higher Education in Mental Health Nursing course she worked in various healthcare settings and enjoyed the course, gaining a distinction in her award. She specialised in her main area of interest, mental health services for older people.

Kerry, who lives in Accrington with her husband Reece, now works in in-patient services on a memory assessment unit for Lancashire Care Trust. Her daily role involves meeting the mental, physical and social needs of older people in hospital.  She works very closely with families and carers, along with other health professionals and Social Services.

Kerry, who likes to swim and grow vegetables in her spare time, would like to continue with her studies and become a community mental health practitioner for older people, specialising in cognitive behaviour therapy in the future.

She received a cheque for £250.
